Android 14 is set to revolutionise smart TV usability

Google announces Android 14 updates for smart TVs at Google I/O 2024, promising enhanced performance, accessibility, and AI-driven content discovery.

At the recent Google I/O 2024 event, Google revealed its ambitious plan to upgrade smart TVs by incorporating Android 14 along with the new Gemini feature, enhancing both new and select existing models that are eligible for updates.

Android 14 is poised to drastically improve smart TV functionality, according to Google’s developers’ blog. This latest version focuses on delivering a faster, more responsive user experience. One of the significant upgrades includes the introduction of new energy modes aimed at reducing the power consumption of TVs when they’re on standby.

Google has also made significant strides in accessibility. New features have been introduced, such as colour correction, advanced text options, and more intuitive navigation, all of which can be easily activated or deactivated using remote shortcuts. These enhancements make the smart TV experience more accessible and enjoyable for all users, ensuring that everyone can navigate their TV with ease.

Multitasking and content discovery with Gemini

The introduction of multitasking capabilities marks a significant improvement, with Android 14 supporting picture-in-picture mode on compatible TV models. This feature allows users to continue watching their favourite show in a small window while browsing other apps or content, enhancing the overall viewing experience.

Moreover, the Gemini feature transforms how users discover content on Google TV. Leveraging AI-based recommendations, Gemini speeds up the process of finding new shows and movies, tailoring suggestions to individual preferences related to genres and actors. “This means you can spend more time enjoying your favourite content and less time searching for it,” explained Menaka Shroff, Senior Director of Global Android Product Marketing.

Additionally, AI-generated descriptions will now appear on the home screen, personalised to reflect your viewing tastes. These descriptions also fill in gaps for missing or untranslated content details, ensuring you never have to wonder about a show’s plot again.

While no specific timeline has been provided for the rollout of these updates, anticipation is high, and users are eager to see how these advancements will enhance their smart TV experience.
