Apple launches AirPods 4 with USB-C charging and active noise cancellation

Apple's new AirPods 4 are available for pre-order today and feature USB-C charging, improved sound quality, and active noise cancellation.

Earlier today, Apple introduced the fourth generation of its AirPods at the highly anticipated Glowtime event. This time, the AirPods come in two distinct models, offering new features that will appeal to many.

Smaller design and enhanced sound quality

The AirPods 4 models have a more compact design than the previous generation. Apple says these new AirPods are over 10% smaller in volume, making them even more portable and comfortable. The earbuds are powered by the same H2 chip that you’ll find in the AirPods Pro 2, ensuring high performance.

Apple claims that a reworked acoustic design improves sound quality with “richer bass and clearer highs.” However, the AirPods 4 still use the familiar open-ear design of the AirPods 3, so don’t expect the same immersive sound experience as the AirPods Pro.

One of the significant changes comes with the charging case. It now supports wireless charging and has been upgraded to a USB-C port, marking Apple’s gradual move from the Lightning connector. As part of this update, the charging case for the AirPods 4 with active noise cancelling (ANC) includes a built-in speaker, which makes it easier to locate the case using Apple’s Find My app.

New active noise cancelling and adaptive audio

The most exciting update for many is the introduction of active noise cancelling (ANC) in one of the AirPods 4 models. Although it likely won’t rival the AirPods Pro regarding noise cancellation due to the open-ear design, it’s still a welcome addition for those seeking a quieter listening experience.

The AirPods 4 also feature Transparency mode with Adaptive Audio. This intelligent mode automatically adjusts the audio depending on the environment, enhancing the overall listening experience by letting you stay aware of your surroundings.

No AirPods Max 2, but fresh colours

You may be disappointed if you were hoping for an AirPods Max 2 announcement at the Glowtime event. However, the original AirPods Max did receive a minor update. The most notable change is the introduction of USB-C charging, which aligns with Apple’s move towards a more universal charging standard.

In addition, Apple has introduced several new colours for the AirPods Max, including Orange, Purple, Blue, Starlight, and Midnight. While these new colours add variety, the long-awaited AirPods Max 2 remains elusive.

Pre-orders for both AirPods 4 models are available starting today. They will officially hit the market on September 20. The standard AirPods 4 will be priced at S$199, while the version with active noise cancelling will be available for S$249. You can place your orders now on Apple’s official online store.
