Apple nears the completion of a deal to integrate ChatGPT into iPhones

[output_post_excerpt]

Apple is reportedly close to concluding negotiations with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its iPhone lineup, marking a significant advancement in the use of generative AI technology on mobile devices. According to sources cited by Bloomberg, this collaboration is set to bring a “popular chatbot” to the iPhone as part of a broader initiative to incorporate generative AI features into iOS 18.

The sources mentioned that while the deal between Apple and OpenAI seems promising, it is still uncertain when it will be officially announced. This development is part of Apple’s broader strategy to innovate and keep its technology ahead of the curve.

Apple’s engineers are currently testing an internal version of the chatbot, known internally as “Apple GPT.” This tool is primarily used within the company for product prototyping and answering queries, utilising datasets provided by Apple itself.

Diversifying technology partnerships

In addition to its potential partnership with OpenAI, Apple has been in discussions with Google to license the Gemini software to enhance AI capabilities on the iPhone. However, these discussions have yet to lead to a formal agreement.

Apple’s approach to AI doesn’t stop there; the company has also reportedly reached out to Baidu. Considering Google’s limited presence in China, partnering with Baidu could allow Apple to implement AI features effectively within the Chinese market.

Anticipating WWDC 2024

Apple plans to unveil further details about its AI ventures at the upcoming Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), scheduled for June 10, 2024. Rumours suggest that the company will utilise both on-device and cloud-based servers, powered by the new M2 Ultra chip, to support the AI features in iOS 18.

The integration of advanced AI technologies like ChatGPT into the iPhone could redefine user interactions with their devices, offering more sophisticated, context-aware functionalities that could transform everyday mobile experiences.
