Black Myth: Wukong is an upcoming AAA action-adventure game developed by Game Science. The game has not set a definitive release date but is hoping to release on the next-generation consoles. The game retells the story from The Journey to the West, a famous mythological tale.

Currently, there is a thirteen-minute trailer up on Youtube that has gotten a lot of traction both in the Chinese and western markets. The game trailer has over 10 million views on China’s video streaming website Bilibili and about 4 million views on YouTube. Black Myth: Wukong is similar to titles such as Ghost of Tsushima or Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. The storytelling mechanic is nearly the same. Players who are interested in story enriched games should try Black Myth: Wukong.

Wukong, the Monkey King, has impressive shape-shifting capabilities. He is outfitted with this legendary and famous staff. In the trailer, players can notice that Wukong transforms into an insect, hinting at other animal shape-shifting abilities. He plays remarkably similar to that of the legend; only time will tell whether the game will stay true to all of the qualities of Sun Wukong. A Triple-A title like Black Myth: Wukong seems promising for the Chinese gaming community as most of the games created within that community are usually popular mobile games such as PUBG Mobile and Call of Duty: Mobile. Having a story based mythological game can expand the horizons of casual and mobile players into more rugged and deep story-based video games.

With the Unreal Engine, Black Myth: Wukong looks very promising with vibrant graphics that compete on the level of some of the most graphically intense video games currently on the market. While Black Myth: Wukong seems to be releasing far after the initial release of the next-generation consoles, it will be fascinating to see how Game Science uses the new hardware and capabilities of the new consoles against their competitors.

The gaming scene hasn’t received many mythological story games in recent months, Black Myth: Wukong may be able to shed some light on the genre as a whole, giving everyone a new experience. If Black Myth: Wukong plays anywhere near to the likes of Ghost of Tsushima and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, the gaming community will once again have a great story-based game with intense gameplay and graphics, a new sight and change of pace to enjoy.
