DJI unveils Osmo Mobile 8 with Apple DockKit integration and pet tracking

DJI’s new Osmo Mobile 8 gimbal features an Apple DockKit, 360-degree rotation, and pet tracking for enhanced creative control.

DJI has officially introduced its latest smartphone gimbal, the Osmo Mobile 8, following its earlier launch in China. The new model retains the familiar design of the Osmo Mobile 7P but features several key upgrades, including support for Apple DockKit, full 360-degree panning, and advanced pet tracking capabilities.

Enhanced compatibility and seamless tracking

One of the main drawbacks of the previous Osmo Mobile 7P was its lack of Apple DockKit support, which limited tracking capabilities when using specific iPhone applications. This omission also left DJI behind competitors such as Insta360’s Flow 2 Pro, which offered the feature. The Osmo Mobile 8 resolves this issue, allowing users to enjoy seamless subject tracking directly through the native iPhone camera app or any of the 200-plus iOS apps compatible with DockKit.

The gimbal’s Multifunctional Module further expands tracking capabilities. Attached to a more secure magnetic phone mount, it enables users to follow themselves or other subjects using any camera app automatically. The module features an integrated LED fill light and doubles as a receiver for DJI’s wireless microphones, including the Mic Mini, Mic 2, and Mic 3. Beyond human tracking, the system now recognises pets such as dogs and cats, adding a fun new dimension for creators and pet owners. Gesture controls remain available for hands-free operation.

Improved design and advanced stabilisation

A standout new addition is the gimbal’s 360-degree pan axis. Unlike its predecessor, which had a physical stop, the Osmo Mobile 8 can now continuously rotate horizontally. This ensures smoother tracking of subjects moving around the camera without interruption. Combined with its redesigned ergonomic grip and a lightweight 0.8-pound build, the gimbal provides enhanced comfort and control, particularly when capturing low-angle shots or following pets in motion.

When paired with DJI’s Mimo app, users gain access to the company’s advanced ActiveTrack 7.0.1 technology. This includes Dual Lens Boost 2, which leverages a smartphone’s wide-angle and telephoto lenses to maintain focus on a subject even in fast-moving or crowded environments. DJI has also introduced a Smart Capture feature, allowing for seamless switching between subjects during filming.

The Osmo Mobile 8 incorporates DJI’s latest three-axis stabilisation system, which effectively eliminates unwanted shakes and vibrations. The result is a professional-looking video experience without the quality loss that can occur with software-based stabilisation on smartphones.

Added convenience and availability

Other practical features include an integrated tripod, a built-in extension rod, and the ability to switch effortlessly between front and rear cameras. Users can also rotate the device 180 degrees to capture rear-camera selfies. Together, these tools give creators greater flexibility whether shooting travel clips, vlogs, or pet videos.

The DJI Osmo Mobile 8 is currently available in Europe for €159; US pricing and availability are expected to be announced soon.
