Google Chrome streamlines access to saved passwords across devices

Google Chrome simplifies accessing saved passwords across devices with an update, now on Android and desktop.

Starting soon, you can access your saved passwords, bookmarks, and addresses in Google Chrome by signing in to your Google account on the browser. This update eliminates the need to toggle on Chrome sync, making connecting your data across different devices easier. This feature is already available on iOS and is now being rolled out to Chrome on Android and desktop.

Enjoy a customised browsing experience

Google’s latest update will allow you to enjoy a more personalised browsing experience by simply signing in to Chrome with your Google account. Once signed in, you can send tabs between devices and access your saved passwords effortlessly, enhancing the ease of managing your online activities. However, signing in remains optional if you prefer to avoid linking your browsing data to your Google account. You can use Chrome without associating your data with your Google account, giving you control over your privacy.

It’s important to note that while this new feature allows you to access saved passwords and bookmarks more easily, saving your browsing history and open tabs in your Google account will require a separate opt-in process. Google has emphasised that these changes aim to meet the evolving expectations of users who seek both convenience and security in their online experience.

Adapting to modern user needs

Claire Charron, Chrome’s product manager, highlighted the motivation behind this update. “Today, users increasingly expect to just sign in to get access to their stuff and sign out to keep it safe,” Charron explained in the official announcement. She added that this update is part of Google’s ongoing effort to transform its legacy sync model into one that aligns more closely with current technology and user norms.

While Google has not provided a specific date for the rollout of this feature on Android and desktop, they have encouraged users to “stay tuned for updates.” This suggests that the release is imminent, and users can expect to see this feature become available on their devices in the near future.
