Google enhances gaming experience with new developer tools and PC titles

Google unveils new developer tools, PC-optimised game titles, and custom controls, making mobile games more accessible on PC.

Ahead of the Game Developers Conference (GDC), Google has unveiled a range of new features to enhance gaming on both PC and mobile. These updates include new game titles, improved developer tools, and greater customisation options for players, making bringing mobile games to PC easier.

New tools for developers

Google Play Games for PC was first launched in beta in 2022 and has since expanded to various regions. Later this year, it will be made widely available to all users.

As part of its latest update, Google is introducing a dedicated software development kit (SDK) for native PC games on Google Play Games. This SDK will include in-app purchase integration, allowing developers to manage in-game transactions more efficiently. Additionally, Google is updating the Play Console, making it easier for developers to distribute and manage different versions of their games across mobile and PC.

One of the biggest changes is that all mobile games will now be available on PC through the Play Store by default. However, developers will have the option to opt-out if they prefer. Games specifically optimised for PC will have a unique icon, while others tested for compatibility will display a “playable” badge.

Google Play Games on PC also expands support for AMD-based laptops and desktops, improving accessibility for a broader range of devices. Furthermore, the service will soon be accessible directly from the start menu on select PC models from various manufacturers.

To enhance gaming performance, Google is introducing a new Graphics API called Vilkan, which will deliver smoother frame rates and improved visuals, including ray tracing. The company is also enhancing the Android Dynamic Performance Framework (ADPF) to provide a more responsive gaming experience.

Developers will soon be able to launch user acquisition campaigns for mobile-emulated and native PC games through Google Play Games for PC. Additionally, those who port their games to the platform can earn up to 15% additional revenue.

New game titles announced

Google revealed several new PC-optimised game titles at GDC, including Game of Thrones: Kingsroad, Sonic Rumble, and ODIN: Valhalla Rising. These games are designed to exploit Google’s new PC gaming capabilities fully.

Thanks to Google’s mobile game porting feature, players can enjoy Train Sim and Pet Shop Fever: Animal Hotel on PC. In addition, Google is bringing select PC titles to mobile, with DREDGE and TABS Mobile arriving on Google Play this month. The critically acclaimed mystery game Disco Elysium is set to launch on mobile later this year.

Improved user experience and custom controls

To offer a better gaming experience on PC, Google is introducing custom controls, allowing players to remap buttons and keys to their preference. Later this month, the company will roll out a game sidebar, enabling quick settings adjustments and multi-account support.

Google is also making tracking and using Play Points on PC easier. Players will soon have access to up to 10x Play Points boosters for purchases, giving them more rewards for their in-game spending.

With these updates, Google is making a strong push to bridge the gap between mobile and PC gaming, offering more opportunities for developers and better experiences for players.
