Google Fi streamlines voicemail access for iPhone users

Google Fi voicemails are moving to the iPhone Phone app, with full rollout by July 2 and app removal of old messages by August 13.

Google is bringing a welcome change for iPhone users on Google Fi by simplifying how they access voicemails. Starting this week, voicemails will appear directly in the native iOS Phone app rather than through the separate Google Fi app. According to a post from the Fi support team, this update began rolling out on June 25 and will be available to everyone by July 2.

Voicemails are now in one place

If you’re a Google Fi user on an iPhone, you no longer need to switch between apps to check your voicemails. Once the update reaches your device, all voicemails will be found directly in the Phone app that comes with your iPhone.

Before this change, voicemails could sometimes appear in the Phone app, but only under certain conditions. You needed to have the Live Voicemail feature turned on in iOS, your phone had to be switched on, and you needed to be in an area with Google Fi service when the voicemail was received. Those limitations are gone now—Google ensures a smoother, more consistent experience.

Google Fi spokesperson Patrick Seybold explained that this change will allow all voicemails to go directly to the iPhone’s built-in Phone app, regardless of settings or service conditions.

Google Fi app to remove voicemail access

As part of this update, Google plans to phase out voicemail support in the iOS version of the Google Fi app. Starting in August, the app will no longer store or show voicemails. If you’ve been keeping voicemails in the Fi app, you’ll need to act quickly.

Google has announced that by August 13, voicemails will be permanently removed from the Google Fi app. To keep your current voicemails, you must download them using Google Takeout, a service that allows you to export your data from Google products. After that date, any voicemails stored in the app will be gone for good.

A cheaper Google Fi plan was also announced

This change comes just a few months after Google revealed other updates for Fi customers. In April, Google introduced a more affordable plan called Unlimited Essentials, costing US$35 per month. This plan offers more flexibility and savings for budget-conscious users without sacrificing core Fi features.

While this voicemail update mainly affects iPhone users, it reflects a broader shift by Google to simplify and improve the Fi experience across all platforms. The goal is to make Fi easier to use by better integrating with the devices and apps you rely on daily.

If you’re on an iPhone and use Google Fi, check your Phone app for voicemail updates. Also, remember to back up your old messages before the August deadline.
