Instagram launches official app for iPad after 15 years

Instagram has finally launched a dedicated app for iPad, offering a redesigned layout, improved messaging, and a more engaging experience.

Meta has launched an official Instagram app for iPad, marking the first time the social media platform has offered a version designed specifically for Apple tablets. The announcement comes 15 years after the release of the original iPad, with Meta stating that the new app has been redesigned “to reflect how people use bigger screens today”, describing it as “lean-back entertainment”.

The introduction of an iPad-specific app means users no longer need to rely on the stretched iPhone version, which previously displayed large blank spaces and sidebars when viewed on a tablet. Meta said the new design aims to provide a smoother, more engaging experience for users.

Key differences from the iPhone version

The Instagram app for iPad retains much of the core functionality of its iPhone counterpart but introduces a few notable changes. When users open the app, they are greeted with the Reels page rather than the Feed, which is the default view on the iPhone version. Stories are also placed above the Reels section, whereas they appear on top of the Feed in the mobile app.

A new Following tab has been introduced for iPad users, offering three separate viewing options. The “All” tab combines algorithm-generated recommendations with content from followed creators. The “Friends” tab shows posts only from mutual follow-backs, and the “Latest” tab organises posts chronologically, allowing users to see the most recent updates first.

The messaging interface has also been improved to take advantage of the larger display. Users can now reply to private Direct Messages without leaving their inbox, and Reels remain visible. At the same time, the comments section is open, making it easier to interact with content while watching videos.

Availability and future updates

The Instagram app for iPad can be downloaded directly from the App Store by searching for Instagram. While the app should be available at the time of writing, Meta advised users to check back if it does not immediately appear.

In addition to the iPad rollout, Meta confirmed plans to launch a tablet-optimised version of Instagram for Android devices in the near future. No release date has been announced, but the company indicated that it is “coming soon”.

With this launch, Meta has finally delivered a long-requested update for iPad users, making Instagram more accessible and user-friendly on larger screens.
