Meta adds reminders and voice messages to Ray-Ban smart glasses

Meta updates Ray-Ban smart glasses with reminders, voice messages, and easier AI access, enhancing convenience for tasks and communication.

Meta is rolling out new updates for its Ray-Ban smart glasses, adding helpful features such as reminders and voice messages. These additions were first revealed at the Meta Connect event last month, giving you more control through the built-in Meta AI. You can now use the glasses to set reminders for daily tasks, like remembering where you parked your car, and even schedule reminders for making important phone calls.

Voice messaging and QR code scanning

One of the more exciting features is the ability to send and record voice messages on WhatsApp or Messenger without needing to reach for your phone. You speak your message into the glasses, and Meta AI handles the rest, making communication hands-free and more convenient.

Meta has also added the ability to scan QR codes or call phone numbers directly from your smart glasses. Imagine walking down the street and spot a QR code for a restaurant menu or event. Instead of pulling out your phone, you can instantly ask Meta AI to scan it and provide the details. This feature brings a new level of convenience to everyday tasks, making the glasses feel like an extension of your smartphone.

Meta also makes interacting with its AI assistant easier while wearing the Ray-Ban glasses. Previously, you had to say “Hey Meta” before every command, but now, once you’ve said it initially, you can follow up with additional questions or requests without repeating the wake word. This smoother interaction allows you to get information quickly, set reminders, or send messages without constant interruptions in your flow.

Another change involves how you ask Meta AI to analyse your surroundings. Previously, you had to preface such requests by saying “look and” when asking about something in your view, but this requirement has now been removed, simplifying the process even further.

Availability and updates

Meta’s AI assistant on these smart glasses is only available in the United States and Canada. However, suppose you’re using the glasses in these regions. In that case, you can enjoy the new features by updating the Meta View app on your iPhone or Android device to version 186, which began rolling out earlier this week. To update, head to your app store and download the latest version.

Additionally, Meta revealed that its limited edition translucent Ray-Ban frames have already sold out online, though you may still be able to find them in select retail stores.

A year of improvements

The US$299 Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses have been on the market for almost a year, and Meta has steadily improved the device. Earlier in the year, they gained the ability to process images, text, and audio, making them more versatile than when they first launched. Future updates promise even more features, such as real-time speech translation, which will start with support for English, French, Italian, and Spanish.

While these smart glasses are undoubtedly impressive, some concerns remain about potential misuse. Recently, two college students raised concerns about how these glasses could be used to invade privacy or expose people’s identities. Meta has yet to comment on its plans to address these potential risks.
