Microsoft brings powerful new Command Palette to Windows users

Microsoft’s new Command Palette makes accessing apps, commands, and files on Windows easier with just a few keystrokes.

Microsoft has introduced a new feature for Windows users that gives you quick access to commands, apps, and files. Called Command Palette, this tool is part of the PowerToys app and is designed to make your workflow faster and easier, especially if you’re a developer or advanced user.

This updated feature works like Apple’s Spotlight or the Alfred launcher on Mac. You can search for apps, folders, and files and perform system commands. It also lets you calculate and launch websites or web searches directly from the search box. Whether you’re trying to open a folder or run a terminal command, Command Palette aims to put everything just a few keystrokes away.

A smart tool for power users and developers

The Command Palette is incredibly helpful if you often use shortcuts or commands. Once installed through the PowerToys app, you can launch it by pressing Win + Alt + Space. From there, start typing what you need; the Palette will give you options in real time.

Microsoft has built this tool with developers and experienced users in mind. You can now quickly open command prompts and shell shortcuts and switch between active windows without clicking around. Microsoft has merged a previous tool called Window Walker into Command Palette. This allows you to move between windows smoothly using simple commands.

And if that’s not enough, you can customise Command Palette with extensions. This means you can add commands or features to suit how you work. It’s one of Microsoft’s most flexible tools recently created for Windows.

Easy setup and open to all Windows users

Command Palette isn’t hidden away for only tech experts. It’s available to anyone using Windows; all you need to do is install the free PowerToys app. Once set up, it stays quietly in the background, ready to be activated whenever needed.

Though Microsoft says Command Palette is meant to replace the older PowerToys Run launcher, both tools are still available. This gives you time to try them out and decide which one best suits your needs.

The tool became available in early April, but Microsoft has recently made small changes and improvements. These updates come just in time for the company’s Build developer conference, which takes place on May 19. Microsoft hasn’t yet said when or if PowerToys Run will be phased out completely, but it’s clear that Command Palette is the future.

A step forward for Windows productivity

Command Palette might seem like a small update, but it shows Microsoft’s focus on making Windows more efficient for people who like working quickly. It cuts down the time you spend searching for apps or typing out full commands, and it’s ideal if you enjoy a keyboard-first workflow.

Command Palette is worth trying if you’re a Windows user looking to speed up your tasks. It’s flexible, powerful, and easy to set up—and it could soon become your favourite way to get things done on your computer.
