PlayStation VR2 controllers may soon work with Apple’s Vision Pro

Apple and Sony collaborate to make PlayStation VR2 controllers compatible with the Vision Pro, enhancing gaming and functionality.

Apple is working hard to enhance the gaming appeal of its Vision Pro headset. Recent reports suggest the company plans to introduce support for third-party hand controllers through an update to its VisionOS. This move could make the Vision Pro more attractive to gamers and developers alike.

Collaboration with Sony is in the works

Apple has reportedly been in talks with Sony to bring compatibility with the PlayStation VR2’s hand controllers to the Vision Pro. Earlier this year, both companies agreed to collaborate on this initiative. However, the announcement of the partnership has been delayed, possibly because the PlayStation VR2 controllers are not sold as standalone accessories.

For these controllers to work with the Vision Pro, Sony needs to reconfigure them to operate independently of the PlayStation VR2 system. Once this is achieved, the controllers will be sold through Apple’s online store and retail outlets, as per the agreement.

Expanding functionality beyond gaming

Apple’s ambitions go beyond gaming. Reports indicate that the company is also exploring ways to use the PlayStation VR2 controllers to navigate the VisionOS interface. This could open up a range of possibilities for productivity and entertainment applications.

Despite these efforts, Apple faces challenges with its Vision Pro headset. Sales could have been more impressive, with fewer than half a million units sold. Additionally, many early adopters are not using the device as actively as Apple had hoped.

In response, Apple is doubling down on gaming to reinvigorate interest in the Vision Pro. The company is also said to offer financial incentives to top game developers to create apps for the platform.

If successful, the collaboration between Apple and Sony could significantly boost the appeal of Vision Pro. Gamers would gain access to high-quality controllers, while developers could leverage this new compatibility to create more engaging and immersive experiences.
