Sony unveils gameplay trailer and release window for Marvel’s Wolverine at State of Play

Sony showcases Marvel’s Wolverine gameplay at State of Play, confirming PS5 exclusive release in autumn 2026.

Sony has given fans their first detailed look at Marvel’s Wolverine during its latest State of Play showcase, held to coincide with the Tokyo Game Show. The gaming expo began today and will run until 28 September. The new title is being developed by Insomniac Games, the studio best known for the Marvel’s Spider-Man series.

A long-awaited reveal

The announcement of Marvel’s Wolverine has been in the works for some time. Insomniac first confirmed the project in 2021, alongside Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, sparking excitement among fans eager to see the character brought to life in a modern video game.

Four years later, Sony has now provided a first glimpse of the gameplay. The preview highlights a darker and more violent tone than Insomniac’s Spider-Man series, showing that players can expect a different kind of superhero experience.

Storyline and characters

While full plot details remain under wraps, Insomniac has described the game as a “global thriller”. Players will follow Logan, voiced by Liam McIntyre, as he travels across several locations, including Canada, Tokyo, and Madripoor —a fictional island nation inspired by parts of maritime Southeast Asia, such as Singapore.

The story will explore Logan’s search for the “secrets of a dark past”. Along the way, he will face enemies such as the Reavers, an anti X-Men group with a particular vendetta against Wolverine. The trailer also teases appearances from familiar Marvel characters, including Mystique and Omega Red, suggesting a rich mix of allies and adversaries.

Exclusive release for PlayStation 5

Sony confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine will be released exclusively for the PlayStation 5. The launch window is set for autumn 2026, giving fans a clear timeframe for when they can expect the game to arrive.

The showcase has generated significant buzz among gamers and Marvel enthusiasts alike, with many eager to see how Insomniac will balance the action, narrative depth, and darker themes in Wolverine’s story. With a proven track record from the Spider-Man series, expectations for the new title are high.
