Yahoo revives Artifact technology in its new AI-powered news app

Yahoo revives Artifact’s tech in a new AI-powered news app, offering personalised feeds, key takeaways, and improved headlines for a better user experience.

Artifact is dead, but long live Yahoo’s version of Artifact. The technology behind Artifact, the news aggregation app built initially by Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, has found a new home within the all-new Yahoo News app.

You can download the new Yahoo News app on iOS and Android. This app offers an AI-powered, personalised news feed tailored to your interests. One of its standout features is Key Takeaways, which provides a bullet-point summary of news articles, perfect for when you’re short on time.

Key features of the new Yahoo News app

The Yahoo News app comes with several impressive features. Top Stories will highlight trending news for you to read, and soon, it will include summary points to help you grasp the main ideas quickly. If you prefer not to see specific topics, you can block stories with undesired keywords and filter out particular publishers.

Just like Artifact, Yahoo News lets you flag content with clickbaity headlines. The app’s AI then rewrites these headlines to be more informative and less sensational.

Yahoo acquired Artifact in April for an undisclosed amount, saving it from disappearing altogether. The Artifact had struggled towards the end of its life, having shifted from its original goal of being a “TikTok for Text” to trying to become a Twitter-like social media platform. Yahoo hasn’t reinstated all of Artifact’s social features, but the new app allows you to share article excerpts with friends. It also includes a gamified “streak” feature and badges you can earn for being an avid reader.

In addition to the app, Yahoo is also enhancing the Yahoo News online homepage. Starting today, you’ll notice a fresh layout highlighting top news stories, offering personalised recommendations, and showcasing trending topics. This new homepage experience is an opt-in feature, so you can explore it at your own pace.

Yahoo’s move to integrate Artifact’s architecture into its News app shows its commitment to offering a more engaging and personalised news experience. By leveraging AI, Yahoo News aims to make it easier to stay informed on the topics you care about most while avoiding the ones you don’t.

Overall, the new Yahoo News app is a significant upgrade, combining the best of Artifact’s technology with Yahoo’s broad reach and expertise in news delivery. Whether you’re a news junkie or just looking for a quick update, this app offers a streamlined, user-friendly way to stay informed.
