Google introduces the Gemini AI side panel for Gmail on iOS and Android

Gmail's Gemini AI assistant will arrive on iOS and Android, offering email summarising, smart replies, and more. The rollout begins on June 24, 2024.

Google has announced a significant update to its Gmail service that will benefit all users, from office workers to top executives. This new feature introduces the AI-powered Gemini side panel to Gmail on both iOS and Android, enhancing productivity and the user experience.

The Gemini AI assistant arrives on the mobile

In a recent blog post, Google revealed that its popular emailing service, Gmail, now includes the Gemini AI assistant on mobile devices. This addition follows the successful integration of Gemini into the web versions of Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Slides, and Google Drive.

Key features of Gemini

The Gemini AI assistant on mobile mirrors many of the features found in its web counterpart. Key highlights include:

  • Summarising email threads: This feature quickly summarises lengthy email conversations, making catching up on essential points easier.
  • Contextual Smart Reply: This tool offers intelligent, context-aware suggestions for replies, streamlining the email response process.
  • Gmail Q&A: A personalised assistant that helps users find specific information within their inboxes.

While the summarising and smart reply features are immediately available, the personalised Q&A assistant will be a paid feature that will roll out to mobile versions later.

Rollout timeline

Google started rolling out these new features on June 24, 2024. The process will continue over 15 days, gradually becoming available to all users.

This update underscores Google’s commitment to improving productivity and the user experience across its platforms, making advanced AI tools accessible to a broader audience.
