Apple could finally bring an OLED display to its MacBook Pro by the end of 2026 or in the first half of 2027, according to a report from Bloomberg. The update, which has been rumoured for nearly two years, would mark a major step forward for the company’s flagship laptop.
When Apple first unveiled the current MacBook Pro design, featuring a notch at the top of the display, many expected a shift from an LCD panel to an OLED one. Instead, Apple used the same mini-LED technology found on the iPad Pro. While mini-LED offers strong performance, it lacks the vivid contrast and deep blacks that OLED screens provide.
Bloomberg’s report claims the OLED MacBook Pro will also feature the upcoming M6 chip and could hit the market between late 2026 and early 2027. Apple is expected to release M5-series Mac models in 2025, which may delay the M6 launch into the following year unless the company opts for a rapid refresh cycle.
More than just a display upgrade
The upcoming model is not only expected to feature an OLED panel but also a refreshed design. Bloomberg previously reported that Apple plans to introduce “new cases” for the M6 MacBook Pro, signalling a significant aesthetic change from the current model.
Development of the M6 chip, internally codenamed “Komodo,” is already underway. Apple is also working on future chip generations, including the M7, codenamed “Borneo,” and an even more advanced version referred to as “Sotra.”
Another notable possibility is the inclusion of a cellular modem, similar to the in-house C1 modem set to appear in the iPhone 16e. If implemented, Apple could offer the MacBook Pro in both Wi-Fi-only and 5G-enabled versions, much like the iPad range.
A significant step for MacBook Pro fans
The move to OLED would represent one of the most substantial upgrades for the MacBook Pro in years, potentially transforming the user experience for professionals and creatives who rely on precise colour accuracy and improved contrast.
While the timeline remains tentative, the combination of a new display, updated design, and next-generation silicon could mark a new chapter for Apple’s high-end laptops. The company’s track record suggests that when it does leap to OLED, it will be a carefully considered change aimed at delivering both visual and performance benefits.
