OneXPlayer unveils the world’s first water-cooled handheld gaming PC

OneXPlayer has unveiled the OneXFly Apex, the world’s first water-cooled handheld gaming PC, challenging the GPD Win 5 with powerful specs.

OneXPlayer has revealed its latest handheld gaming PC, the OneXFly Apex, which is set to become the world’s first water-cooled handheld device. The announcement comes only shortly after the reveal of the GPD Win 5, with the new device already positioning itself as a serious rival in terms of power and performance.

The OneXFly Apex will be powered by AMD’s Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor, the same high-performance chip found in the GPD Win 5. However, OneXPlayer has gone a step further by incorporating a silent liquid cooling system, a feature not previously seen in handheld gaming PCs. While details on the cooling setup remain limited, a teaser video posted by the company shows the device in action.

One of the standout specifications is its ability to reach up to 120W of power, well above the GPD Win 5’s 75W thermal design power limit. The device also boasts an 85WHr removable battery, slightly larger than the GPD Win 5’s 80WHr option, suggesting longer play sessions on the go.

Bigger display and improved ergonomics

The OneXFly Apex aims to address some of the most common concerns among handheld gaming enthusiasts. It will feature an 8-inch 120Hz variable refresh rate display, larger than the 7-inch screen on the GPD Win 5. The bigger screen promises a more immersive experience, especially for players who find existing handheld displays too small.

In terms of design, the new device takes inspiration from the Lenovo Legion Go series. It includes adjustable multi-stage triggers, which are often praised for their comfort and versatility. By adopting this ergonomic approach, OneXPlayer aims to make the Apex one of the most comfortable handhelds on the market.

With its powerful processor, large battery, and upgraded display, the Apex appears poised to deliver a high-performance gaming experience that strikes a balance between practicality and comfort.

Pricing and competition in the handheld market

Although pricing has not been officially confirmed, the OneXFly Apex is expected to cost upwards of US$1,500. This places it at the higher end of the handheld gaming market, alongside the GPD Win 5 and significantly above the Lenovo Legion Go 2 and the ROG Xbox Ally X.

For comparison, the Lenovo Legion Go 2 starts at US$1,099 for the Ryzen Z2 model, with the Ryzen Z2 Extreme version priced at US$1,349.99. The GPD Win 5 will retail for around US$1,850. Meanwhile, the ROG Xbox Ally X is also competing in the US$1,000 range.

Both the ROG Xbox Ally X and Lenovo Legion Go 2 run on AMD’s Ryzen Z2 Extreme processor, which is considered only a minor step up from the earlier Z1 Extreme. By contrast, the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 used in the OneXFly Apex is viewed as a significant leap in performance. For gamers prioritising power and longevity, the Apex may prove to be the most compelling option, even at its higher price point.

The arrival of the OneXFly Apex marks a significant step forward in handheld gaming technology, not only with its water-cooled design but also with its focus on delivering performance comparable to that of larger gaming machines. For players willing to invest in premium hardware, it could become the new benchmark in the handheld gaming market.
