OpenAI rolls out ChatGPT for Teens with guided learning and parental controls
OpenAI introduces a dedicated platform for ages 13 to 17 featuring guided study tools, break prompts, quizzes and comprehensive parental safety controls.
OpenAI is launching ChatGPT for Teens, a dedicated experience for users aged 13 to 17 centred on learning, critical thinking, safety and wellbeing. Scheduled to roll out worldwide over the coming weeks, the new offering will also be available to users in Singapore. Rather than serving as a quick shortcut to obtain answers, the platform is designed to encourage teenagers to work through challenging problems independently. According to OpenAI, nearly nine in 10 teenagers on ChatGPT already use the tool to learn, find information, build skills or improve productivity during a single week.
This educational approach aligns with Singapore’s EdTech Masterplan 2030, outlined by the Ministry of Education. The framework calls for artificial intelligence in education to be used purposefully, safely and in ways appropriate to students’ age and development.
Learning tools encourage students to work through problems
Study Mode guides students through problems using questions, structured explanations and regular opportunities to reflect on their reasoning. Developed by OpenAI in partnership with teachers, learning scientists and pedagogy experts, the feature aims to deepen academic comprehension. To help families embed these guided learning habits into their regular study routines, Study Hours allows teenagers or their parents to choose specific periods when Study Mode is enabled by default. In addition, ChatGPT for Teens can recognise when a student appears to be trying to shortcut an assignment, prompting Responsible Homework Reminders that direct the learner towards step-by-step problem-solving instead of immediately providing an answer.

To consolidate understanding, students can also generate custom quizzes directly from their homework, notes and other materials. The service incorporates interactive learning experiences covering more than 300 maths and science topics, which OpenAI notes are used by 18 million people across ChatGPT each week. Furthermore, pronunciation support is available across more than 61 languages to assist with language learning.
Additional safeguards apply to teen accounts

Age-appropriate safeguards are automatically applied whenever OpenAI’s age-prediction system estimates that a user is under 18. To promote balanced digital habits, the service prompts teenagers to take a break after 90 minutes of activity within a three-hour period. Families can also establish healthier boundaries around ChatGPT use through Quiet Hours.
Through Parental Controls, parents with linked teen accounts can manage features such as Study Mode, voice mode and image generation. OpenAI will also notify parents in certain high-risk situations, including indications of potential self-harm as well as cases where a linked teen account is deactivated for violating policies covering violent threats or acts of violence. Ultimately, these additional safeguards are intended to reduce unhealthy reliance on artificial intelligence and reinforce that ChatGPT should support learning and creativity without replacing real-world relationships.
