WhatsApp introduces AI-powered Writing Help and Message Summaries in Singapore

WhatsApp launches Writing Help and Message Summaries in Singapore, offering AI-powered assistance with strong data privacy measures.

WhatsApp has launched two new artificial intelligence (AI) features in Singapore, bringing Writing Help and Message Summaries to users in the region. The features, first introduced in select markets earlier this year, are powered by Meta’s Private Processing technology, which prioritises data security while delivering personalised AI assistance.

Writing Help offers tailored message suggestions

Writing Help is designed to help users craft messages with the right tone. By tapping a new pencil icon within a one-on-one or group chat, users can select from AI-generated style suggestions such as professional, funny or supportive. These suggestions can then be customised before sending, making it easier to adapt messages for different contexts.

Currently, Writing Help supports only English and is available in the United States, Singapore and several other countries. Meta plans to expand the feature’s availability to more languages and regions later in the year.

Message Summaries improve chat navigation

Message Summaries, first launched three months ago in the United States, is now being introduced to Singapore. This tool is particularly helpful for users managing busy group chats, as it generates quick previews of unread messages. By summarising lengthy conversations, the feature saves time and helps users stay updated without having to scroll through every message.

Like Writing Help, Message Summaries runs on Meta’s Private Processing technology, ensuring that the summarisation process is both secure and private.

Private Processing enhances security and privacy

Private Processing is built on a Trusted Execution Environment (TEE), which safeguards user data while enabling AI-powered services. According to Meta, this secure cloud infrastructure ensures that no one, including Meta and WhatsApp staff, can view the messages being processed.

The system protects privacy by using only the information necessary to complete a request, encrypting all communications between the user’s device and Private Processing, and avoiding any storage of messages or AI-generated responses after processing is complete.

The introduction of these AI-powered tools marks WhatsApp’s latest step in enhancing its messaging platform with more intelligent features, while reinforcing its commitment to user security.
