Creative launches Sound Blaster AE-X internal sound card for high-fidelity PC audio
Creative’s Sound Blaster AE-X brings ESS SABRE audio, headphone amplification and software tuning to desktop PCs.
Creative Technology has announced the Sound Blaster AE-X, a flagship internal PCIe sound card designed for PC users who want a higher-fidelity desktop audio setup without adding an external DAC, amplifier, or additional desk hardware.
Table Of Content
The Sound Blaster AE-X combines an ESS SABRE DAC, dedicated discrete headphone amplification, and software-based audio control through the Creative NEXUS app. It is aimed at users with high-performance PC builds, premium headphones, or desktop setups where onboard motherboard audio is the limiting factor.
The sound card is priced at £169.99 and US$179.99. It is available now through Creative’s website, with in-country retail store availability to be confirmed through authorised dealers.
Built as an internal alternative to external DACs
The Sound Blaster AE-X is positioned as an integrated PCIe upgrade for desktop PCs. Creative is pitching the card as a cleaner alternative to external DAC and amplifier setups, as it removes the need for additional cables, power bricks, and separate desktop hardware.
Its internal design also allows the sound card to work directly within the PC system, with Creative citing lower latency through native PC integration and unified control through its software ecosystem.
The card is built around an ESS SABRE DAC, specifically the ES9039Q2M, and supports up to 32-bit / 384 kHz PCM playback. Creative lists a signal-to-noise ratio of up to 130 dB and DSD support up to DSD256, with ASIO 2.3 support for low-latency playback.
Designed for demanding headphones
Creative is also targeting headphone users who need more drive than typical motherboard audio can provide. The Sound Blaster AE-X includes a dedicated discrete headphone amplifier, with support for headphone impedance from 8 to 600 ohms on the main headphone output.
The card supports up to 350 mW at 32 ohms and a maximum output voltage of 6 Vrms. Creative says this gives users stronger headroom, improved control, greater dynamic range, and cleaner low-end response when paired with higher-end headphones.
Connectivity includes a 3.5 mm headphone output, 3.5 mm mic-in or line-in, left and right RCA line-out, optical TOSLINK input, coaxial SPDIF output, and an HD Audio front panel connector. The front panel headphone output supports 32 to 300 ohm headphones, with lower output power than the main headphone port.
Creative NEXUS adds software-level tuning
The Sound Blaster AE-X works with the Creative NEXUS app for audio customisation and configuration. The software includes a 10-band parametric EQ, Auto EQ with support for community-curated headphone profiles, and PC-native control across applications.
The sound card also includes Creative’s Sound Blaster Acoustic Engine suite. Its features include Surround for expanded soundstage, Crystalizer for restoring detail in compressed audio, Bass for low-frequency adjustment, Smart Volume for consistent levels across apps, and Dialog Plus for clearer vocals in movies and other content.
The minimum system requirements include an Intel Core i3 or AMD equivalent x86 processor, an x86-compatible motherboard, Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 64-bit, 8GB RAM, an available PCIe slot, and an internet connection for software download.
