Google expands in-car apps, turning vehicles into mobile entertainment hubs

Google is expanding its in-car apps, bringing more streaming and gaming options to vehicles with built-in Google services, starting with Volvo and Polestar.

Google is bringing more apps to vehicles, moving one step closer to turning cars into smartphone-like entertainment hubs. In a recent update on its official blog and the Android Developers Blog, the company announced that vehicles with built-in Google services will soon have access to a wider range of apps.

These apps will be available while the car is parked, indicating that Google focuses on enhancing in-car entertainment rather than navigation or driving functions. The new additions are part of Android’s Car Ready Mobile Apps Programme, which helps developers optimise their apps for Android Auto car displays. This programme targets apps designed for larger screens, ensuring a seamless experience for drivers and passengers alike.

Streaming and gaming apps take centre stage

One of the key highlights of this expansion is the inclusion of more streaming and gaming apps. By integrating popular entertainment platforms, Google is actively working to make its connected car ecosystem more like a traditional smartphone.

A dedicated section in the Google Play Store now highlights tablet apps adapted for use in cars. This includes various streaming services such as Plex, Red Bull TV, CTV News, NBC News, and casual mobile games. While the current selection might not seem particularly thrilling for some markets, such as Singapore, there is significant potential for future updates.

With this initiative, Google aims to transform in-car experiences, allowing passengers to enjoy entertainment on larger screens without draining their smartphone batteries. By bringing in more streaming and gaming apps, the company caters to a growing demand for in-car leisure options, especially during long journeys or while waiting in a parked vehicle.

Rollout to begin with Volvo and Polestar

The expansion of Android for Cars will begin with Volvo and Polestar vehicles, two brands already featuring built-in Google services. Google has confirmed that more car manufacturers and models will follow soon, broadening access to these enhanced in-car apps.

As the automotive industry embraces digital innovation, Google’s latest move strengthens its position in the connected car space. Introducing more entertainment-focused apps could pave the way for greater integration, turning cars into mobile entertainment hubs.

With this rollout, your next road trip or car waiting time could be much more enjoyable, with a range of streaming and gaming options at your fingertips.
