Google Play Games to introduce new profiles with stats and social features

Google is introducing new Play Games profiles on Android, featuring gaming stats, achievements, and social tools, rolling out from 23 September.

Google is preparing to roll out a major update to its Play Games service on Android devices, introducing redesigned profiles that showcase gaming statistics, achievements, and new social tools. The update, which will be applied automatically, is scheduled to begin on 23 September for most regions and on 1 October for users in the European Union and the United Kingdom.

Enhanced profiles to showcase gaming progress

According to Google’s help page, the new Play Games profiles will offer “showcasing and tracking your game progress and stats, new ways to build your gaming community, and allowing you to tailor your profile to your liking.” Players will have access to a suite of new features that make it easier to personalise their profiles, display milestones, and engage with other users.

The redesigned profiles are intended to streamline the gaming experience by reducing the need to switch between apps to manage account details. Once the update is implemented, Play Games profiles and related features will appear directly within the Google Play Store, providing a central hub for players to view their progress and achievements.

Global rollout and notifications

The rollout is set to begin automatically, with Google notifying users via email to ensure they are aware of the changes. Users in most regions will see the new features from 23 September, while those in the EU and UK will receive the update from 1 October. The company has not indicated whether users will have the option to opt out of these changes, suggesting that the update will be universal.

By integrating Play Games into the Google Play Store, Google aims to simplify access to gaming information while building a more connected gaming community. Players who choose to make their profiles public will be able to connect more easily with others, view shared achievements, and track their gaming history in a centralised location.

Comparisons with other gaming platforms

While Google has not shared all the details of how the new profiles will function, the service is expected to mirror some of the social features available on platforms such as Valve’s Steam. Steam’s player profiles allow users to display gaming history, achievements, and in-game statistics, serving as both a record of progress and a way to connect with other players. Google appears to be following a similar approach as it looks to expand the role of Play Games on Android devices.

The update reflects Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance its gaming services and strengthen user engagement. By placing greater emphasis on player profiles and achievements, the company hopes to create a richer gaming ecosystem within its existing Play Store framework.
