Samsung plans earlier Galaxy S25 FE release and new tri-fold phone in 2025

Samsung reveals plans to launch an early Galaxy S25 FE and debut a tri-fold smartphone before the end of 2025.

Samsung is preparing to end 2025 on a high note with the launch of two major devices: an updated version of its affordable flagship, the Galaxy S25 FE, and an all-new tri-fold smartphone. The announcements were made during the company’s second quarter earnings call, held on 31 July 2025.

The updates come as part of Samsung’s strategy to strengthen its position in the premium mobile market while continuing to innovate in the foldable space. The South Korean tech giant is aiming to release the Galaxy S25 FE earlier than expected, and also hinted at the debut of a tri-fold smartphone by the end of the year.

Focus on premium growth and the early Galaxy S25 FE launch

Speaking during the earnings call, Daniel Araujo, Vice President of Samsung’s Mobile eXperience (MX) division, highlighted the company’s outlook for the second half of 2025. According to Araujo, Samsung is focused on capturing the growing demand in the premium device segment.

“The premium segment is projected to grow modestly, driven by shifting consumer preferences towards higher-end products, in part due to economic growth in emerging markets,” he said during the call, which was made publicly available via Samsung’s investor relations portal.

To support this, the company will continue to prioritise flagship devices and promote its newest models. Araujo added, “We will continue our flagship-first approach in the second half, and we are confident in the strong market reception of our newly-launched seventh-generation foldable products, which feature significant advancements in performance, design, and durability.”

As part of this strategy, Samsung plans to launch the Galaxy S25 FE earlier than in previous years. The previous generation, the Galaxy S24 FE, went on pre-order in Singapore on 27 September 2024. An earlier timeline for the Galaxy S25 FE means it could be available to consumers sometime before late September 2025.

Tri-fold smartphone and XR headset on the horizon

While the Galaxy S25 FE is aimed at users seeking a more affordable flagship option, Samsung is also preparing to unveil something far more cutting-edge: a tri-fold smartphone. The company has not yet revealed specific details or specifications about the device. Still, it is expected to expand on Samsung’s existing foldable technology, which includes the popular Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series.

“Meanwhile, we’re also preparing to introduce next-generation, innovative products, including our XR headset and tri-fold smartphone, this year,” Araujo confirmed.

The tri-fold phone would mark Samsung’s most ambitious foldable product to date. It is likely to feature a new form factor that allows for multiple folding points, significantly expanding the display area without increasing the device’s physical footprint when folded.

This development follows the recent release of the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7, which have already received praise for improved durability, refined design, and performance upgrades. While Samsung did not provide a release date for the tri-fold device, its confirmation indicates the company’s strong push to lead the next wave of smartphone innovation.

Building on the momentum of foldables

Samsung’s emphasis on innovation comes amid growing interest in foldable devices. The company’s foldable smartphones have consistently improved over the years, and the seventh-generation models aim to build on that success.

Consumers who have recently purchased the Galaxy Z Fold7 or Galaxy Z Flip7 may already be anticipating what comes next, and the announcement of a tri-fold smartphone suggests Samsung is not resting on its laurels. The tech firm appears keen to stay ahead of competitors in the foldables race while offering a range of devices that cater to various market segments.

As 2025 progresses, further announcements and potential teasers are expected ahead of both the Galaxy S25 FE’s early release and the anticipated tri-fold phone launch.
