Vivo’s Android reskin receives a major update in October 2024

Vivo announces Funtouch OS 15, promising faster app startup, smoother animations, and new features. It will be available on select phones from October 2024.

Vivo has officially announced the launch of Funtouch OS 15, the next major update to its Android-based software. As of September 30, 2024, the company revealed several exciting new features and improvements, promising its customers a smoother and faster user experience.

Vivo claims that Funtouch OS 15 delivers up to 15% faster average app startup speed, even when the system is overloaded. This improvement is made possible by replacing Android’s standard Fair Scheduling algorithm with a custom priority scheduling algorithm. The new system optimises how app resources are allocated, allowing them to start more quickly and efficiently.

Additionally, Vivo has fine-tuned its zRAM compression algorithm, resulting in a 40% increase in compression speed. This means that background apps now consume less GPU memory, making it possible for more apps to run simultaneously without slowing down the phone. These tweaks should provide users with a noticeably faster and more responsive device.

Enhanced user interface and smoother animations

Vivo has paid particular attention to the feel and responsiveness of its user interface (UI) in Funtouch OS 15. One of the key changes includes giving UI animations a dedicated execution channel, which Vivo says boosts app startup response times by up to 20%. This should make navigating through apps and menus feel quicker and more fluid.

Vivo has also expanded its UI interactivity to improve the overall user experience. The updated interface now includes 700 different touch scenarios, designed to make interactions smoother, similar to the sensation of flowing water. Alongside these updates, Funtouch OS 15 features 3,800 redesigned system elements, including fonts, colours, and icons, to create a fresh, modern look.

New features and compatibility

Funtouch OS 15 doesn’t just focus on speed and aesthetics. It also introduces several new features to make everyday tasks easier. The update includes built-in support for Link to Windows, allowing users to seamlessly connect their Vivo phone to a Windows PC for file transfers and notifications. There’s also a new AI Image Lab, which can intelligently remove shadows from scanned documents, making them look clearer and more professional.

For gamers, Funtouch OS 15 enhances the Ultra Game Mode with a new sidebar for easy access to performance settings. Additionally, it lets you run games in a small window, so you can quickly reply to messages or check notifications without interrupting your gameplay.

Availability and future Android updates

Vivo has confirmed that Funtouch OS 15 will be rolled out to its Vivo X Fold3 Pro, Vivo X100 series, and iQoo 12 devices from mid-October 2024. The timing of this update aligns with the expected release of Android 15. Earlier this month, Android 15’s source code was uploaded to the Android Open Source Project, allowing brands like Vivo to begin customising their new operating system versions.

With these updates, Vivo users can expect a more responsive, feature-packed, and visually appealing experience on their devices.
