Xiaomi has introduced a unique accessory alongside its latest flagship smartphones, the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, which were launched in China this week. The company’s new Retro Handheld Console Case has sparked both curiosity and amusement, transforming the modern handset into something resembling a vintage gaming device.
A retro twist on modern design
The 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, which lead Xiaomi’s new 17 series, already stand out with their dual-screen design. Each features a second display positioned on the back, stretching across the wide camera island. This secondary screen can be used for framing selfies, setting timers, or controlling music playback.
However, the feature drawing the most attention is not the second screen but Xiaomi’s official gaming accessory. The Retro Handheld Console Case, priced at ¥299 (approximately US$40), clips onto the phone to replicate the appearance of a handheld console. It comes equipped with four face buttons and a circular D-pad that resembles an old iPod Click Wheel rather than a traditional gaming control.
Xiaomi has also built in a 200mAh battery, which the company claims can power the device for 40 days of gameplay, based on three hours of use per day. To complete the nostalgic experience, the case even comes preloaded with Angry Birds 2.
Practicality versus playability
While the concept is eye-catching, its practicality for serious gaming is questionable. The case’s D-pad and button layout have already drawn criticism for being awkward, and the positioning of the camera lenses reportedly blocks part of the display, making games harder to play.
There are also limitations in everyday use. The accessory turns off the phone’s wireless charging capability when attached, meaning users will need to remove the case to recharge the device without cables.
Despite these drawbacks, the retro case is a talking point in Xiaomi’s accessory range. It showcases the company’s willingness to experiment with unusual designs, even if they might not provide the smoothest user experience.
Global availability remains uncertain
For now, the 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, along with the Retro Handheld Console Case, are only available in China. Xiaomi has not yet confirmed whether the phones or the case will launch in Europe or other international markets.
The move comes as Xiaomi continues to expand its product ecosystem and push design boundaries in the smartphone sector. Industry watchers suggest that if the retro gaming case proves popular in China, it could influence the company’s approach to future accessories.
Some enthusiasts are already speculating about what Xiaomi might develop next. As one report noted, “Maybe this is a sign that the mad scientists in Xiaomi’s accessory lab are cooking up something even weirder for the fourth-generation photography case for next year’s 17 Ultra.”
Whether regarded as a nostalgic nod to handheld consoles or an impractical gimmick, Xiaomi’s Retro Handheld Console Case highlights the brand’s unconventional approach in a highly competitive smartphone market.
