Xiaomi unveils SkyNomad range-extender SUV with private jet-inspired cabin
Xiaomi introduces the SkyNomad N90, a luxury range-extender SUV with a flexible cabin and a claimed 1,500 km range.
Xiaomi is preparing to expand into China’s competitive luxury SUV market with SkyNomad, a new vehicle brand focused on extended-range electric technology and flexible premium interiors.

The move follows the strong performance of Xiaomi’s SU7 electric saloon and YU7 SUV. The SU7 has gained significant attention in China and has reportedly outsold the Tesla Model 3 in the domestic market. Xiaomi is now looking to build on that momentum by entering a segment currently led by established range-extender manufacturers.
SkyNomad is expected to introduce two models, the N70 and N90. The larger N90 will be positioned as a full-size, three-row SUV designed to combine long-distance capability with a luxury cabin inspired by private aviation.
SkyNomad targets China’s growing range-extender market
The SkyNomad range will use extended-range electric vehicle technology, commonly known as EREV. Unlike a conventional plug-in hybrid, an EREV relies entirely on electric motors to drive the wheels. Its petrol engine works as an onboard generator, producing electricity when the battery requires additional energy.
This arrangement allows the vehicle to retain the smooth, responsive driving characteristics associated with electric power while reducing concerns about finding a charging point on longer journeys. Drivers can complete shorter trips using battery power and rely on the petrol generator when travelling beyond the vehicle’s electric range.
Range-extender technology remains relatively uncommon in Europe. Models such as the Leapmotor C10 REEV and Mazda MX-30 R-EV are among the limited options available in several markets. However, the technology has become increasingly popular in China, where manufacturers have used it to offer large electric SUVs with extended driving ranges.
Li Auto is currently one of the leading companies in the sector, offering six vehicles that combine electric motors, battery packs and petrol-powered generators. AITO, Deepal, Avatr and Leapmotor have also introduced vehicles using similar systems.
Xiaomi’s decision to establish SkyNomad as a dedicated range-extender brand places it in direct competition with these manufacturers. The timing may provide an opportunity, as Li Auto reportedly experienced a 74 per cent year-on-year decline in sales during the first four months of 2026.
N90 combines a luxury interior with a modular living space
The SkyNomad N90 is expected to be the flagship model in the new range. According to information reported by Car News China, the full-size SUV will feature three rows of seating, a premium leather interior and rotating front seats.
The cabin has been designed to serve several purposes beyond everyday transport. SkyNomad’s promotional material describes an adaptable interior that can become “a studio for one, a cafe for two, a meeting room for three, or a play area for the whole family”.
This focus on flexibility reflects a wider trend in China’s premium vehicle market, where manufacturers are adding entertainment systems, reclining seats, work areas and home-style features to large family vehicles. The aim is to make the cabin suitable for business, leisure and long-distance travel.
SkyNomad is also expected to offer an N90 Max Camping Edition. This version will add a pop-up roof and an integrated side awning, allowing owners to use the vehicle as a premium camping space. The equipment could appeal to customers seeking a vehicle that combines luxury travel with outdoor activities.
The N90’s large cabin and aviation-inspired approach are likely to be central to its marketing. Its rotating seats and adaptable layout could allow passengers to create a more social environment while the vehicle is parked. However, seating would need to remain in an approved position while travelling to meet safety requirements.
The SUV’s dimensions provide the space required for these features. The N90 measures more than five metres in length, placing it among the largest passenger SUVs expected to enter the Chinese market.
Large battery and petrol generator deliver extended range
Under the body, the N90 is expected to use a 1.5-litre petrol engine supplied by Harbin Dongan, a subsidiary of Changan. The engine will operate as a generator rather than directly powering the wheels.
Energy will be stored in a 76-kWh ternary nickel-manganese-cobalt battery pack. Two electric motors will provide a combined output of 310 kW, equivalent to approximately 416 hp.
Reports suggest that the N90 could travel for around 230 miles using battery power before the petrol generator is required. With the range-extender system operating, the vehicle is expected to offer a total driving range of more than 1,500 km (approximately 930 miles).
Despite these figures, the N90’s size and weight may affect its overall efficiency and performance. The SUV reportedly weighs 3,361 kg, making it considerably heavier than many conventional electric vehicles. Its 416 hp output may appear modest when compared with the vehicle’s substantial mass.
The launch also represents an important change in direction for Xiaomi. The company achieved early success in the automotive sector with fully electric vehicles, but SkyNomad will introduce petrol engines into its expanding vehicle portfolio.
China has invested heavily in fast and widely available public charging infrastructure, raising questions about the need for large range-extender vehicles. However, some buyers may still value the ability to travel long distances without depending entirely on charging stations, particularly in remote areas or during busy holiday periods.
For Xiaomi, SkyNomad could provide access to customers seeking the driving experience of an electric vehicle alongside the flexibility of petrol-assisted long-distance travel. The N90’s combination of a large battery, a premium interior, and a modular cabin may help distinguish it in an increasingly crowded luxury SUV market.
